samurai on Sustainability
How do you bring sustainability into samurai?
We love being asked this! Our section Being Sustainable includes all of our efforts in sustainability currently, where we might be falling short and what we’re working towards in the long term.
How am I supporting climate action if I buy from you?
Each garment in our store has a Sustainability Impact section that details information on energy and resource use in making the garment as well as data on resources saved. Moreover, we have shared a transparent break up of our prices so that you are aware of exactly where the money you pay us is used. You can also read more about our commitment to the SDGs charted by the UN to understand the impact we wish to create in sustainability through samurai.
Are there any aspects of your garments right now that are not sustainable?
Yes, we’re always working towards an ideal! If you ask us what we want to improve upon in our future collections, it would be to have biodegradable paraphernalia like laces, hooks and eyes, non-plastic zips, wooden buttons etc. which we haven’t been able to include in our maiden collection. We also see ourselves moving away entirely from cotton soon.
What are the fabrics used in this collection and where are they from?
The two MVPs in Prologue are hemp and solar vastra! You can know more about The Hemp Studio, our hemp partners and Greenwear, our Solar Vastra partners by following the links.
How did you choose your partners?
Our tailors, we have worked with for several years. They understand and respect the fabric they work with and their fit is unparalleled. For our fabrics, we were fortunate to find partners who are aligned with us in thought, values and in their vision towards a sustainable future, with a commitment towards their role in creating it.
Why have you included cotton in your collection?
A tough one! We know the implications of cotton on the environment and trust us when we say, we didn’t want to use it. The next best course of action for lining our garments and our only colour dyed dress was to procure cotton from Greenwear. They ensure the cotton yarn and fabric they produce consume zero fuels as they use solar powered charkha’s, operated by local rural women they employ.
How do you plan on using your profits for sustainability/How do you ensure transparency at all points in your supply chain?
We’re super big on being as transparent as we can and love to talk about all parts of our business openly. Please check out our section Being Sustainable which covers all of these topics!
